Child: 0–148 pg/mL; SI units: 0–148 ng/L

■ Hormone secreted by the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans.
■ Glucagon deficiency may occur with pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis.
■ Elevated glucagon levels occur with glucogonoma
(cancer of the alpha islet cells), diabetes, acute pancreatitis,
cirrhosis, stress, renal failure, rejection of transplanted kidney.
